August is a big vacation month for most families! Between packing, making sure the kids are ready and making sure all your items for work are done, the last thing you want to do after you’ve turned on your out-of-office reply is stress about food for your vacation. This means finding a happy medium between trying to help your family eat exactly as you do at home (unrealistic) and totally going off the rails (a recipe for sluggishness) during your trip. Here are our tips to stay mostly on track while still enjoying your time off!
If you're road-tripping:
Stop at a grocery store rather than fast-food places on your drive. Pack a cooler with yogurt and cheese sticks. Throw in some apples, bananas, and whatever fruit your kids love! Pack some dry food such as nuts and granola. This way you won't feel pressured to go for the greasy fast-food breakfast sandwiches. Take stops to eat as you need. You can dip cut-up veggies in hummus or guacamole and top whole-grain bread or crackers with pouches of salmon or tuna. Plan ahead...if you know you have a longer drive, make sure you pack ice-packs and plan out where you'll stop. Maybe there is a healthier restaurant you could stop at and check out; do your research ahead of time and plan your stops out as much as you can!

Flying:
Pack snacks! Make some homemade energy bites, chickpeas, nuts, and fruit are perfect for flying as well! If you're stuck buying food in airports look for healthier food options, most Mexican places can be semi-healthy by ordering a burrito bowl and loading up on veggies.
In a hotel or Airbnb:
Stock whatever kitchen area or fridge you have, even if it's just a mini-fridge! Find a local grocery store you like and plan to go shopping. Not only will you eat healthier, but you'll also save money by not eating out at restaurants as much! Eggs, fruit, cereal, grab-and-go vegetables are all great options! Oatmeal is also a great option as most hotels have a microwave.
Be flexible with yourself, but also be sure to plan ahead. By planning ahead, it allows you to make smarter choices while in the chaos of being on the go! Happy vacationing!
