This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honoring five incredible women whose courage turns pink into power. Each of them faced the unimaginable — and came out stronger, braver, and more determined to help others do the same. Their stories remind us that early detection saves lives, that community matters, and that even in the hardest moments, strength can bloom. Meet the fighters who continue to inspire us all.
Cheryl- Greenwich, CT
"In early 2017 I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 53. Having always been very physically active and healthy, it shook my world. Following surgery in early March I was advised not to lift anything heavy for several weeks. Having never been good at 'rest and recovery' and needing to earn money to pay my medical bills, I was back to work soon thereafter. I was excited to get back to teaching Bodypump as soon as possible so I could feel 'normal' again. I started with an empty bar and worked my way back up to my regular weight and then some. I had a great group of members at the Greenwich location and they kept me motivated and progressing in MY recovery. To say I LOVE Bodypump is an understatement. The energy and enthusiasm in the room is contagious. I’m grateful to my members for their commitment to me and to the Edge for their support and understanding in letting me take the time I needed. Today I am 8+ years cancer free and still teaching Bodypump, playing tennis, platform tennis (paddle), running, teaching yoga and more (at nearly 62 years old). In my opinion, staying active is the key to feeling good and enjoying life."

"I've made a career out of health and fitness- an exercise science degree, masters in public health, personal trainer and group exercise instructor career. I've dedicated my life to supporting the health of others. 18 months ago it was time to take care of my own health. Genetic testing showed I possessed the BRCA gene mutation and despite all mammograms coming back clear, I decided to be proactive. I carved the time out for myself and worked with an amazing team of medical professionals to move forward with a double Mastectomy. Pathology results after surgery shocked us all. What I thought was prevention going into surgery actually turned out to be treatment - they discovered that I was positive for breast cancer and didn't know it before surgery. I am grateful that I took the time to make my health a priority- it saved my life. I am grateful for a team of medical professionals. I am grateful for science and research.
After the hardest surgery and longest recovery period - I found my strength and passion for fitness again at The Edge. The flexibility of going to different clubs (I often travel for work) and the variety of classes and instructors who show true compassion and care for members helped me to connect back into the world of fitness after a long healing journey - basically starting from square one. My takeaway from all this is only YOU can dedicated the time to yourself for your wellness. We only have one body and one life - so find your fitness tribe and know that you're worth it."

"My journey with breast cancer started in April 2014. I am a wellness person and get mammograms every year like I am supposed to. That year they found triple negative breast cancer in my left breast. I had a partial mastectomy, chemo, and radiation. Through the support of my husband, my family, my friends, and all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Siteman I had a beautiful journey to breast cancer free! I celebrate being breast cancer free everyday. During the month of October I dye my hair pink and I wear all kinds of clothes and earrings that represent being a breast cancer survivor! People need to know they are survivors! I am surprised by the number of people that I have affected and that have affected me during my breast cancer journey! I am now 11 years breast cancer free👏"

"I am Fatima Khiara and have been a Zumba Instructor for years with The Edge in Cranston, RI . I am an 8-year breast cancer survivor and feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a wonderful Zumba and fitness community. Their support has been instrumental in helping me navigate the challenging journey of pain, chemotherapy, and surgeries. Both mentally and physically, their encouragement has made a significant difference in my healing process.🩷 "
Martha- Washington Township, NJ
"My name is Martha Bormann. I am a three-time triple negative breast cancer survivor. Between the ages of 40 and 50 I fought back against breast cancer three times – enduring a lumpectomy my first battle, a double mastectomy during my second round of breast cancer and then, even after a double mastectomy, during my third go with cancer I endured the hardest battle, yet, and I kicked it’s butt again! Cancer doesn’t just impact you in the moment. The side effects from chemotherapy and radiation treatments stick with you and the worries linger. I have had long lasting impacts that have even contributed to countless skin cancer diagnoses. After all of that, I took more control of my future health again becoming more physically active; Edge has been a part of helping me learn the best ways to push my body to its own specific limits and maximize my own unique strengths. Challenging myself not only helps me physically reduce my risks of reoccurrence but it builds mental strength and confidence in myself as well. Cancer didn’t stand a chance against me!"
