It's that time of year again! The leaves are changing colors, the air is crisp - suddenly summer has faded into fall. During this time of year, we start to slow down and enjoy more time indoors. The holiday seasons are just around the corner and surely enough in many places around the country snow is not too far away. Now is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the cooler air before it gets too cold! Grab a jacket, get outdoors, and try out these outdoor workout ideas.
Go for a Run
One of many people’s favorite thing about fall is the gorgeous hues of the leaves changing. What better way to indulge in the fall scenery than taking your run outdoors! Focus on the all the colors around you to help propel you through your run. Spice up your run by getting out of your neighborhood and going to a local trail or try a new route for your run to make it more exciting.
Take a hike
Literally! Another way to enjoy the fall foliage can be done on a hike. Find a local mountain or peak in your area. Don’t want to hike alone? Find a partner whether it be a family member, a friend, or even your dog. Reward yourself at the top by taking in the views around you and even bringing a small snack to enjoy at the top. And remember the hike back down is usually easier than the hike up.
Use a Pumpkin
Another fall favorite is picking pumpkins. The majority of the time they are left on front porches or steps as decorations, but they can be easily incorporated into a workout. A pumpkin can be used as a weight in a variety of different exercises. Check out this Pumpkin Workout we posted last fall or try this workout:
Do Yardwork
The best way to get outside and moving in the fall is by doing chores around your yard in preparation for the winter. Raking leaves engages your arms as well as your core, and if you rake the leaves into bags you can even up the exercise by including some squats with the bag. Weed your garden or pathways which will not only make your yard look better but involve a variety of movements to get your heart rate up. Even mowing the lawn can kill two birds with one stone if you have a push mower. Not only will you get your steps in for the day but you can increase the difficulty by doing lunges between each step.
Volunteer
If you are in the mood for giving you can easily give back to your community while also burning calories. Head to the local park in your neighborhood and help rake to help clean up the leaves or even help pick up any trash that may be littering the park. No parks around you? No problem! Head to a local shelter and see if they will let you walk the dogs. Not only will you be able to make a new furry friend but you will be able to make some lucky dogs very happy all while getting your steps in!
It’s important that regardless of how you decide to stay active this fall, you are making sure you are doing so in a safe manner. Be sure to wear a mask where necessary and social distance if needed. Always be aware of your surroundings, never pick up any objects that are too heavy, and remember to make sure you feel comfortable and aren’t pushing your limits too far.
