What is Pilates?

Developed by Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that focuses on strengthening muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility.  It was when he was held at an internment camp during World War I that he developed a series of exercises and various pieces of equipment that aided in the recovery of injured and disabled prisoners of war. Pilates exercises emphasize core strength, but they also target the entire body, promoting balance, coordination, and endurance.

The practice is often performed on a mat or using specialized equipment like a reformer, which incorporates springs for resistance. Pilates focuses on  controlled movements, breathing techniques, and mindfulness, making it accessible to people of all fitness levels. It’s commonly used for rehabilitation, improving flexibility, enhancing athletic performance, and promoting overall physical well-being.

In addition to strengthening the body, Pilates also encourages mental focus and connection to movement, helping to reduce stress and improve overall body awareness.
