One of the most popular exercises you will see when taking our Edge Strong classes is a kettlebell swing- let's master it together! But first, let's talk about some benefits of this exercise:
1. It’s a very efficient full-body workout. It’s a total body movement with just one exercise! It's an efficient use of time at the gym!
2. Effective cardio workout. Due to the full-body movement of the exercise, it gets your heart rate up, giving you an effective cardio workout.
3. Strengths multiple muscles quickly. The kettlebell swing strengthens your core, glutes, hamstrings, quads, back, and arms.
4. It burns lots of calories. The average person can burn 400 calories in just 20 minutes with a kettlebell. That’s the equivalent of running a six-minute mile! And this doesn’t even include the after-burn effect! Researchers credit the brisk calorie burning to the fact that the kettlebell workout is a total-body movement that is also done very quickly due to the interval-training format.
5. Improves balance and posture. To keep your balance during this exercise, you need to keep your back straight and engage your core. When you use a kettlebell, you naturally learn what good posture feels like.
To perform this exercise: make sure your feet are a little wider than shoulder-width apart. The keyword for this workout is HINGE, which means there should be a slight bend in your knee, and then just let it flow. Keep your head up, and keep your arms locked while performing the exercise and all the hinging should only happen from the middle. It's all in the hips!
