Looking to take your fitness to the next level? You love to sweat and have been successful in achieving and maintaining your fitness goals. Now you can share your fondness for fitness with others and help them by becoming a Group Fitness instructor.
Think about some of your favorite fitness instructors. They probably have a lot of pep, are encouraging, and don’t mind being in front of a crowd. Here are some other traits that will help make you successful as a group fitness instructor:
Observant—You’ll need to watch your students’ form and see if they need correction or help with certain exercises and positions.
Friendly and fun—Keeping the class welcoming and upbeat will make gym goers want to come back for more.
Confident—For 60 minutes all eyes are on you. You have to command the room to get them to follow your routine and stay with you.
Think your personality fits the bill? Here’s how to go about becoming a group fitness instructor.
Research certifications: You can get certified through different associations such as the ACE or AFFA. If you want to teach a specialty program such as Barre or Les Mills, see what programs are offered in your area. Find a trusted program where you can learn from the best.
Practice, Practice, Practice: Practice as much as you can. Do workouts in home in front of your mirror. Lead your husband and family in a workout class. Go over the routine and choreography in your head while you’re waiting in lines or traffic. Practice as much as you can.
Start Small: As a new instructor, you have to earn your reputation. Take any classes that are offered to you to start getting your name out there. Eventually, as more people learn about the awesome new instructor, you can start teaching more popular classes and times.
